Advocacy Day 2026
On January 18, 2027 (MLK Jr. Day) we showed up for Adam and told his story to legislatures. We came together as a community to ask for their support to curb gun violence. With the help of your advocacy Virginia passed multiple pieces of legislation to help curb gun violence in the Commonwealth. In particular, four of the bills we supported were signed into law on April 10, 2026, including:

HB 19: Closes the "boyfriend loophole," prohibiting anyone convicted of assaulting a family member from owning a firearm.

HB 93: Helps ensure that those convicted of domestic violence offenses, and those subject to certain protective orders, are separated from their firearms.

HB 110: Makes it unlawful to leave a firearm in an unattended vehicle unless it is properly secured.

HB 21: Requires gun manufacturers and sellers to implement reasonable processes and business practices to prevent sales to those prohibited from owning firearms.
These are incredible strides, and everyone involved in Advocacy Day should be bursting with pride. But our work isn't done. Last year, the General Assembly failed to pass HB 1359, which would have effectively prohibited anyone under 21 from owning a firearm. Had this law been in place last year, it could have saved Adam's life. If it passes next year, it will save others. I

Monday, January 18, 2027 (MLK Jr. Day) we have our first opportunity to make our voices heard by participating in Advocacy Day during the 2027 Virginia General Assembly Session. We need your help telling Adam’s story to state legislators. And we need your voices to help us demand the General Assembly take meaningful action to reduce gun violence.
What is Advocacy Day?
In short, it’s a day to speak directly with members of the Virginia Senate and the House of Delegates about the bills they’ll be voting on during the session. We anticipate a number of bills relating to gun violence will be introduced this session, and it’s important that our legislators know how our community has been impacted by this issue. Advocacy Day presents an excellent opportunity for our community to show up in force and demand change.
How to Participate?
Show up. On Monday, January 18, 2027 we’ll be organizing a group to meet at the Virginia State Capitol (1000 Bank Street, Richmond, VA 23219). We’ll meet up with other advocates (like Virginians for Change), and head into the Capitol building. There will be a session, an opportunity to meet with legislators (for those comfortable doing so), as well as vigil and speeches outside the Capitol.
